Position:                                Lifeguard

Reports To:                           Aquatic Center Manager

Status:                                    Part Time Class 2

FLSA Classification:             Non-Exempt

General Statement of Position:

Ensures the safety of all patrons and provides information pertaining to water quality, temperature, and other related items.

 

Qualifications:

Be at least 15 years of age. Possess a valid American Red Cross Lifesaving Certificate. Possess a valid First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Knowledge of the proper use and application of water safety, rescue, and first aid techniques.

 

Representative Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintains a positive community image for the District.
  • Strives to maintain a positive environment among the District’s organizational division.
  • Actively supports the Safety Policy and the District established loss control program, including training, safety rules and developing ideas for the prevention of incidents, while providing a safe environment for Park District staff members and patrons.
  • Participates in the preparation of daily records relating to rescues, assists, first aid, weather conditions, and sanitation as may be required.
  • Assists in the proper maintenance and sanitary operation of the aquatic facility inside and outside, hose down floors, take garbage out, etc.
  • Performs rescues and appropriate follow-up procedures including the use of any available equipment in the performance of first aid.
  • Performs other duties in connection with the operation of the facility as may be assigned.

 

Representative Marginal Job Functions:

  • Must be able to effectively communicate with pool patrons
  • Have a complete understanding of pool specific practices such as whistle code, positions, rotation procedures, emergency action plan etc.
  • Strong customer service skills

 

Position Considerations:

  • Must have the physical ability to perform job functions
  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions including heat and sun
  • Must demonstrate good judgment, appropriate level of response, and logical thought process in the execution of the duties and responsibilities
  • Must have ability to deal with people under stressful situations
  • Will be expected to display initiative when working within area of responsibilities.
  • Must have ability to respond quickly and accurately to public
  • Will be required to work evenings and weekends
  • Must have good safety awareness.
  • Must be able to resolve conflicts fairly and exercise good judgment
